Camshaft timing for d24t
Hi Guys,
I have check around the postings for the timing of this engine and found that most links are not up-to-date or no longer available. I got the TDC set up. No problem with the crankshaft. What I need is the "how-to" do the timing on the camshaft. Specific locations for the marks at front and back of the camshaft. Do I have to remove the valve cover to set up timing? Let me know Amigos. |

Cam timing is done by removing the rear drive sprocket for the IP.
Also need to remove the valve cover. There is a slot on the back of the camshaft. 1/8" plate steel works to go through the slot and rest on each side of the cylinder head where the valve cover gasket sits. That will place the cam in the correct timing. Injection timing will then need to be re set also. I think KJet.org has a PDF file of the green book for the d24.

You also need to pop the front cam sprocket off the cam to reset its position on the cam snout. It's a taper fit with no key. Belt tension has to be set as the first step (by adjusting water pump position) -- don't make it too tight, as it will become significantly tighter when the engine is warm. Then set crank at TDC, cam at TDC using the slot in the back, pull all the slack in the belt onto the slack side, and cinch down the cam pulley, torque to ~40 ft-lbs, and you're done.
You'll also need to retime the injection pump after this is done... which requires a procedure and some tools. Check that greenbook Anders mentioned for info on that too.
