New Camshaft
Hi,
i've installed a new camshaft and have doubt about valve clearances. I read when a head work is done, they have to be measured after 1000Km. Can i use the old adjust discs and then adjust valve clearance after 1000km? or do i have to adjust valve clearance now with the new camshaft and then again after 1000KM?? Put the old discs in to get you close, and check them now. Then again as well.
Some people may argue to only use new discs so they rotate and wear into the new cam correctly. I can see what they mean, but have also re-used good looking discs before. But the bottom line is: I would not assume the new cam is the exact same as the old one. Why was it replaced? -Spenser |

Cam lobes have little wear on them, a bit round shaped. The previous owner bought a new cam and never installed it. He gave it to me when i bought him the truck. Cam is a Febi unit, and you're right, it's not exactly the same, i found that while looking for differences between cams. After reading your words, i think i will measure valve clearance now for buying new discs and put them together with the new cam.

I have measured valves clearance and found that 5 of 6 intake discs are within specs, the other one are 0.04mm out of specs. All the exhaust valves clearance are out of specs, all of them have less clearance than specs.. Two of them, have less than 0.04mm clearance or not clearance at all (my thinnest tool is 0.04mm size).
What's the correct method for calculating the disc size for these two exhaust valves with no clearance at all? 1: I=0.15mm E=<0.04mm 2: I=0.20mm E=0.10mm 3: I=0.25mm E=0.15mm 4: E=<0.04mm I=0.20mm 5: E=0.20mm I=0.25mm 6: E=0.10mm I=0.11mm Last edited by Ekus; 01-29-2016 at 08:51 AM. |

Have you tried measuring the exhaust with the thinnest disc you have on them?

I can not try that yet, i'm waitting for the hazet tool arrives. I guess it will arrive next week.
I think i will go to install the old cam beacouse i need to use the truck now and i can not spend so much time fixing this problem, but i need to know how to resolve it for the cam reinstall. Do you mean i need to put the thinnest disc on those exhaust valves for trying to find some clearance? I will try it... but,what if whith the thinnest disc i have no clearance? I've installed the old cam and those exhaust valves have no clearance too. All discs are 3.85mm!! only one disc is 3.70mm! seems like valve adjustment was made by a troll
I will try to find some clearance using the 3.70mm disc when the hazet tool arrives. THANKS |
