Exhaust leak between manifold and turbocharger
Dieselers,
Over the last week or so I noted an unfamiliar noise coming from under the hood. I tracked it down to a leak between the exhaust manifold and turbo, traces of soot helped in reaching this conclusion. I recall when mounting the turbo on the workbench that I had difficulty in reaching a few of the nuts which secure the turbo. I feel pretty confident that I was not able to torque one of two down sufficiently; I have two questions:
Thanks for any suggestions on the topic, Jim

There is a metal gasket that you can install, many turbo shops along with ebay sell them for next to nothing. You don't have to run a gasket however, if the turbo flange and manifold is not warped. I use a regular wrench and could get to all my nuts, except for the nut closest to the block towards the front of the engine. I used a socket with a long (12" or so) extension to position the ratchet below the turbo.
