A fool's game to try to diagnose sounds many times removed from the original source but I will try.

To someone accustomed to driving a Lexus, yes the D24T makes quite a racket.

Can be louder and more acute when cold.

Detrimental for your hearing to stick you head down into the engine compartment when it is running.

Much quieter overall than a Cummins.

Volvo factory installed good hood and firewall insulation and gaskets with sound deadening properties.

I have heard the "marbles in a can" description refer to too far advanced timing.

Iain Tyrell (classic workshop) has said before, use cheap mineral oil in a newly rebuilt engine to run it in. Then change to a fully synthetic oil there after. The mineral oil allows the parts to bed in properly
