Default 91 d24tic timing belt

I need to do the belts on my 91 940 with the single idler and tension adjustment on the water pump and trying to gather parts.
I think I have found the correct belts, tensioner and rocker cover gasket but can’t find the correct water pump, does anyone have the correct part number and recommend a good manufacturer for one with a metal impeller?

As for the tools I’m looking at one of these

Unless I can find someone with the correct tools in the uk who would rent them il have to try make them

That tool kit looks right for the injection pump timing.

As for the other tools, you can improvise a lot of them especially if you have some fabrication skills. The most specific tool is the one to lock the crankshaft in place while you loosen and then tighten to spec torque the large 27mm head bolt that secures the crank pulley and harmonic balancer. However, much more commonly available tools intended for similar Audi/VW 5 cylinder applications can be used with minor modification.

See these posts from member jetfiremuck about the tool set he modified for use. The Audi balancers have a single locking lug inside the crank pulley whereas the D24T has two lugs. So you simply have to cut a second slot into this tool, then it is ready for use. Of course requires a long and very strong 3/4" breaker bar to insert into the tool opening, and then a second very large torque wrench capable of up to 350 ft-lb to tighten the bolt when reinstalling. But that stuff exists.

Here is an example of the tool kit that those posts are referring to: https://www.ebay.com/itm/VW-2-4-2-5-...8AAOSwnHBdHx6C

This kit also provides you the locking plate for the back of the cam. So with this set plus the other timing set you linked, you'd have almost everything you need, really missing only the counterhold tool for the camshaft (Volvo tool #9995199, pretty readily available, or can be substituted with a generic "sprocket buster" counterhold type tool), and then also missing the 9995188 wrench extension for the crank bolt torque if using a small torque wrench that only goes up to 250 ft lb. But again you can get away without that as long as your torque wrench is heavy enough to achieve the 340 ft lb on its own.

As for the parts and water pump -- look under the early type TD category under LT parts at brickwerks.co.uk and you should find everything, many of us have had good experiences purchasing from them (no connection).

See this category for all parts related to timing belt service on the early style engine with belt tension adjustment via water pump pivot:

Sorry, a correction. It looks like Brickwerks shows a water pump with a good type impeller on that page but now I see it lists it as currently out of stock.

I would recommend searching under "Hepu P527" on ebay, Hepu is a German manufacturer known for quality and its pumps all use the correct type cast metal impeller. P527 is the Hepu part number for early style D24/T/IC.

Or as an alternative that many of us consider to be a slight upgrade -- you can also use Hepu P528 instead. This is the exact same pump housing and pump impeller, but it has a pulley that is two teeth smaller so it spins the water pump a few % faster. Its original application is the 2.4L 5cyl VW Transporter diesel but it is a direct fit on the D24T as well, the pump adjustment easily accommodates the slightly smaller pulley diameter. Believed to provide a slight but useful benefit in cooling system performance especially at lower engine RPM and heavy load, with no drawbacks. I have used a few and been pleased with them, personal experience.

Looks like both the P527 and P528 are readily enough available. Graf and Laso are other known good manufacturers if you find an equivalent from one of them more easily.

Excellent thanks, I have a 2.5tdi t4 as well so those tools I’ve looked at before, the crank holding tool was the only one I wasn’t sure on I can fabricate the rest, does anyone have the dimensions of the 9995188 and camshaft bolt tools so I can get away using my 250nm torque wrench?

Tool 5188 is basically a 1-foot flatbar extension w/ 27mm socket on one end, and cutout for 1/2" square drive torque wrench on the other. The 1-foot extension calculates out the ~340 ft.-lb. at the bolt to a more manageable force of 255 ft-lb. at the end of the extension.

Anyone had experience with the pumps supplied with the gates kits? I know the belts are good. Seems almost to good to be true both belts and pump for £70ish quid, looking up the kit that should include the idler too.

I've used Continental TBs, Gates IP belts, just what was easily available at the time, no issues with belt quality. The weak point in the system is not belt quality, by far; it's the oddball process, (esp. the crankshaft pulley bolt required torque) combined with interference engine.
