If your '84 motor doesn't have EGR then it will be completely clean inside. You can check it quickly by just pulling the pressure relief valve off the front of the manifold, you don't have to remove the whole thing. You can see into it from there, but again, without EGR, unless something unusual is happening there will be nothing to see.
