Dimensions of the D24

Hi,
I am going to buy a D24 engine from a Volvo 240.
Any idea about the Dimensions (Lengh/Width/Heigh)?
I want to transport it in the trunk of my 745, but have no idea if it fits properly (standing position would be excellent, or slightly slanted) and I don't want to borrow a trailer.
I am to lazy to take a measuring tape and check mine out and make myself dirty :p

The only thing I know it has a dry weight of 182kg, what is totally uncritical.

Best regs,
Bernd

I don't know the dimensions off hand but I do know they will fit in the back of a 740 wagon standing upright. The difficult part though is getting it in there with an engine hoist since the hoist will want to hit the top of the hatch opening. I had to use a piece of pipe as a crossbar and very short sections of chain to lift the engine, rather than one longer piece of chain, as that added too much height.

Or if you're buying it from a place that can load it in with a forklift, you will have no problems, just have to work carefully pulling it back out. :)

Yesterday the D24 has been delivered by the seller on the trailer (With a 245 B230F :D) and unloaded at my stepfathers' garage.

Tomorrow I will try to load it with my stepfather and stepbrother in the trunk, I have no worries, put some old planks on the roof and push it in
Then I will bring it to my workshop

Will report, soon.

Last Saturday I moved the engine to my workshop, approx. 100 mi with highway, country roads, city, without incidents.
We pushed the engine with three guys in the baggage on planks. Was pretty heavy, but ok and it worked :p
Straped it, otherwise it was moving & wiggling.
At the workshop I had only my brother the crane could not be used due to the tailgate. But I had a motorcycle lifter, so I put a pallet on it, liftet it and we pulled it out with ropes fixed at the bottom of the engine (alternator holders and the hole of the starter) and pulled it on the pallet.
It was easier than we expected :o

BTW: the heigh of the engine is approx. 70 cm, so it hat enough space to the rooftop ;)

Biggest thing I had in mine was a full size refrigerator, good work.

What kind of radio antenna do you have there?

It's the european standard (I think you're asking because in the US you have different ones?). Must be Volvo 9447930.
Or do you have usually the automatic moving antennas (witch stops working properly after a bunch of years :p)

Yes the electric troublesome version here. What do you do when entering low ceiling parking structure?

Intercooler-BurnzZ 03-09-2020 02:22 AM

Well, I never had any situation with low ceiling parking in my life where I had to remove the antenna. In the case it should happen I have a tiny wrench which I can use to loose the antenna and dismount it.

Nicely done. The amount of work these wagons can do is amazing considering how they are still nice, refined cars to drive.

Your car's color and trim are very interesting, definitely not a combination we got here in the US. I think that non-metallic blue color (or one close to it) was available here on 1985 740 GLE models but don't believe it was available here after that, at least not on the 700 series. Seems like maybe they did offer it on some 86 and 87 240 series in our market but I don't think even those cars had it here in 1988, the year of your car.

Your wagon also has the all-black door rub strips and window trim that we only got here on the 740 Turbo models, which to my knowledge never had this particular blue color available. So the entire combination as a whole looks quite unusual to our eyes. :)

All the Turbo Diesel 700 series models that were sold here had "GLE" trim with chrome door and window accents. Did your TD wagon come stock with the blackout trim too? Or did you swap that on with the turbo wheels?

Hi, mine was sold only as a simple "740 GL Turbodiesel". The black trims are usual here. I swapped the grill with the turbo one, because the original was boring.

The rims are with winter tires I took from another 945 Diesel I recently sold to a Swedish guy, will swap it soon to the summer ones (16" Hydras)
Regarding the color, yes it was even here in Germany relatively rare. I saw a couple of 700/900 series cars with all types of "usual" colours but very rarely with this kinda blue.

I would like to swap the front to the US one, because it looks better
Have sumun who could sell it here, but had no time yet.

Best regards,
Bernd :o
