D24T OE valve cover color?
All,
Every D24T I've seen has a valve cover that is an amalgam of rust, oil, and a brownish color. What color is the cover supposed to be? I have an opportunity to clean the cover up and I'd like a nod to how it looked from the factory. Thanks!

I have seen some that were unpainted, and some that were painted black.
On one of mine, I stripped and cleaned it then painted it black and liked the result. I'll have another one apart soon and am thinking about just doing clearcoat on that one, so it can look unpainted but not get oxidized. Will see if I like that better but my guess is that black is the way to go.

The last two pics of the link below will show you an original VC and probably as close to new as can be found anywhere. Yes, it is black. Later!

No, it's not a TDI. It's a 2.0L Audi IDI TD, so calling it a "D20T" is basically right. Look at the piston crowns -- IDI design, the TDI has a swirl chamber set into the piston crown, completely different design.
The Audi 2.5TDI engine is the same as the Volvo D5252 (which means D=diesel, 5=5 cylinders, 25=2.5 liters, 2=2 valves per cylinder, like the 960 straight six which is B6304 -- B=benzin so gasoline, 6 cylinders, 3.0 liters, 4 valves per cylinder). Like they did with the D24T in the '80s, which is a VW/Audi engine, Volvo used the 2.5TDI in the '90s and early '00s in Europe and called it the D5252. Around 03 or 04 they finally designed their own diesel engine, the D5, which is much better than the D5252... would be nice to get one of those into the US and install it into something someday.
