Default Update

Progress....
Also, the larger D24 manifold will fit!
This saves me blocking the turbo input, while I still toss the blow off valve.
We hope to complete the timing and the front of the engine tomorrow.
Then I can figure out how to run the 2.5" tubing to the fluid/air inter-cooler and into the manifold.
So far, so good.

Here is the VE pump being calibrated:

And here is a video of it being done: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-adERDGFPaI

Default Progress

Now we have the engine timed as well as the injection pump. It is set to .96 mm since I am in Denver. We also added a 24v solenoid to the VE IP to advance timing by 1 deg with the flip of a switch, for when I am up in the mountains.
Also in place now is the fluid/air inter-cooler. The 40 gal diesel tank had an inch of water in the bottom, having that scrubbed out now. Here are some photos....

Solid state relays to control the 24v to 12v converter and to turn on power to the winch.

Added switches: Green is for timing advance, yellow for the 12v system and the winch. And they light up when they are on.

Not a great shot of the solenoid on the IP:

Here you can see the inter-cooler, it is a tight fit. I also removed the belt driven fan and added an electric one. I ordered up an AutoCool III. It will control the fan you see here and the one in back for the inter-cooler.

Fit check that I can get it all in there:

It is fortunate that the footage of the comedy of errors that ensued from our first few attempts to get it started is NOT posted... First had multiple fuel leaks to address. Then after priming it, plugged in the glow relay and relay worked, but we had no glow. Found and fixed a faulty connection at the relay output, turned the key again, and immediately popped one of the two glow system fuses. Found the misplaced hose clamp that shorted the bus, moved that and hardwired that fuse (for the front 3 plugs). Glowed it again, tried to start, this time it was making smoke and wanted to fire but acted like only some of the plugs were working. Checked fuses again, now noticed a hairline crack in the *second* glow system fuse for the rear 3 plugs, only the front 3 were hot. Fixed that fuse, OK, but still no fire. Getting fuel to injectors and all 6 plugs are in action, plenty of smoke and coughing now. Remembered we timed the pump after the valve cover was already installed -- could we have timed it 180deg out? Neither of us remembers checking... Pulled off valve cover, yep, flunk us both back to Pump Timing 101! Retimed pump, valve cover back on, turned key, wondering what we are going to find next... bang, it was running.

Wow! Such a nice project. Congratulations, guys! That engine is so organized. Rare to see a D motor that clean. It`s so clean that you can eat off it. Quality pictures too.
I`d love to see that machine fully camouflaged, going uphill in deep snow. I don`t mind watching those `wtf is wrong` cranking videos either.

Default Movement!

Here is is moving for the first time.
youtube link

It is smoking a little here. After about 20 miles that has cleared up a lot.
It works great, I can't wait to really lay into it. Only issue I have now is that the brakes are soft. When I step on them the vacuum pump wheezes. So I need to figure that out.
