Alternative engines to D24T

Hi

My friend has a VW LT35 camper van with a D24T fitted that's died. Are there any alternatives that would fit with the minimum of tinkering. I'm think along the lines that the d24 is an old engine that may be hard to find and a newer design would presumably produce more power and be more fuel efficient.
