Oil: Delvac 1300 15W40
How it ran the day before: It seem to run okay. Not 100% smooth like a nice D24T but with a little wobble to engine. still seemed to hit on all six. I am using a K&N cone filter.

On the OM616: I am going to be using the 3spd auto. Its what I got at the moment. IF I find a 5spd or figure out a Laycock OD unit for it.

The 616 seems like it may be a downgrade from the D24T in terms of power. Old tech and two fewer cylinders. The D24 platform is cutting edge design compared to the 616, it can trace a line back to the 1930s! Heavy motor for the power it makes, too. I respect them for their toughness but hard to see having much fun with it.

Won't try to talk you out of it but seems like fixing or replacing the D24T might give better results? There's always the attraction of trying something new though I suppose.

I was thinking of ways to explain your possible loss of compression. My question about the oil was because lifespan of these engines is remarkably better with full synthetic oil. I think there was a VW directive at one point to run synthetic.

The air filter question was because running a substandard filter would let more dirt into the engine, excessively wearing away the rings and cylinder walls.

Of course, we would expect these items to negatively affect the compression over time (thousands of miles), not one day to the next.

To be fair, I grabbed this engine out of the junkyard with unknown amount of miles on it. Looked clean, no leaks, Also the block was painted black, somebody was in there at some point. The car it came from looked like it was sitting for a decade. When I put the engine in to the car, I did have a hard time getting it going. but once I messed with fuel settings and putting manual glow plugs and new glow plugs in. then I had it running. .. .. pooorly. horrible miss that I dealt with for 4 years until this summer when I tried my hydrolock method to unstick some piston rings. I did manage to get the compression up on the two lowest reading cylinders, engine then ran smoothly.

I haven't done anything yet. been cold and snowy and I don't want to until I get the OM616 put back together and running.

Its still got life!!!!!
I replaced the starter, and battery, then used two sets of jumper cables.
Took a ton of cranking, and stuff, but it finally cracked off.And its colder tonight than it was last Wednesday.

Great news!

So::::: Chalk it up to slow cranking speed?

What is the hydrolock method?

with all injectors out, pour oil or some concoction of penetrating oil into the cylinder with lowest compression. replace injector on the cylinder you are treating. use ratchet wrench on crank pulley to rotate engine clockwise until cylinder hydrolocks. then apply some pressure to it. If it eventually finishes its cycle, then you have a VERY bad engine. but if not, then keep rocking the crank back and forth with some force, to ensure oil is getting forced into the piston rings.

*To best get an idea of where the piston would be at, during pouring in fluids, take valve cover off. I'd have the pistons near TDC, and fill fluids until its coming out of injector hole, then let it sit for 30 mins. then finish rotating until piston is past TDC, reinstall injector.

I have had mixed results, but worth a try to get rings unstuck, and bring up compression numbers.

**After procedure, it is absolutely necessary to purge all cylinders before reinstalling all injectors. so with all injectors out, use starter motor to spin engine several revolutions. This can be very messy to use a beach towel or something to place over injector holes to catch excess oil.

When I was in sweden this summer it seemed that even they had different turbo's on their D24's then we in the Netherlands.

Maybe something interesting to find out..

For less lag? I don't get full boost until 3500 or so on stock turbine housing, that's when it feels like the motor wakes up. 16# by 2600 seems pretty reasonable
