Actually IIRC 240 series diesels and 1983-84 760 turbodiesels do use an external fork return spring and did not come with the large weight on the end of the cable. The spring hooks between the fork near the cable attachment point and the transmission mount bracket..... '85 and up use a different clutch fork with an internal return spring (IIRC) and different throwout bearing attachment mechanism and those feature the big chunk of metal on the end of the cable and no external spring.

Chad your car probably should have had a spring originally, anywhere you can find to hook it onto should be fine as long as it allows you to achieve some tangible free play at the clutch pedal so that you know you're getting full engagement.

If it was adjusted with no free pedal before, did you check the condition of the release bearing? Might be a little more tired than most if it has had pressure on it all the time from linkage maladjustment....
