So did you read the "mark up and go for it" as marking the positions of the rotating parts with whiteout or something? Agreed, not likely to produce satisfactory results.

Caveat here, knowing that torque wrench readings are not accurate at the ends of the scale-- the 350 ft-lb should be near the middle of the scale. 100 - 500 or 100 - 700 ft-lb torque wrenches do exist, 4 - 5 feet long, easily costing $400 - 600 or more.
Maybe make friends with somebody who works at the bus barn?
