No bubbles in the return line is good but did you see that when the engine was running well or when it was malfunctioning? Since you have an intermittent problem you want to watch for things...

Still sounds like a possible inlet restriction or air leak but a sticky governor or intermittent sticking vane in the suction pump in the IP could be a possibility also.
