Torque at wheel bearing

Does anyone know about torque specifications at the nut of the front wheel bearing? Thanks in advance.

Skf says this = ?
SKF says this:
(see `VOA` procedure for 740 Volvos bet 1985-1990) Tighten adjusting nut to 50 ft-lbs/68 Nm while rotating wheel. Back off 1/3 turn. Loosen slightly and install cotter pin. http://www.vsm.skf.com/~/media/Files...ve/457377.ashx (BUT for Volvo 760 1988-1990 it says `VOA`procedure with 102/140. ) |
^ this is for the serviceable bearings, If you have newer struts, they have a unit bearing which needs a much higher torque.

Front bearing

The large nut was not tight at all, I could move it around with one finger. Same on the passenger side too: extremely loose (plus it had no grease left). Is this normal?

Typically with tapered roller wheel bearings, you are shooting for ~0.010endplay of the hub on the spindle.(just enough with both hands push and pull on the tire, you can feel it move.) Yhere certainly should not be a lot of tension on the nut. If the metal is gun blued form heat, the bearing is toast, if not, lube it up.
bear ing should be packed with grease, and there should also be some in the cavity of the hub, a layer 1/4" thick there is plenty, do not pack it full. the outer race is supposed to be a press fit in the hub, check this...if you can move the race in the hub without a tool, the hub will have to be replaced. was there a washer between the bearing and nut? most cars have one with a 'tooth' that keeps wheel rotational force being transferred to the nut. Wow, I am so old I've made the FAQ at Brickboard.... |

This is really general, but they know a thing or two about bearings... http://www2.vsm.skf.com/~/media/File...640_44_47.ashx and vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0RqlrnoiqnY If you get them packed and adjusted, and they run free and quiet, they are fine. Maybe the Volvo nut is so beef they didn't bother with a washer, been a long time singe I had to look at mine. |
